** The Queen of England's Speech was expect-- ed with the utmost impatience. On Friday it was rumoured in Paris that it would contain the most pacific assumiucra, and would put an end to thə uneasiness which for the past month has held pos- session of men's minds; these proguasties have been fully realised. All the friends of order, peace, and humanity, will learn with delight that concord has been re-established between France and England. For our part, wo ever believed that war would

full of confidence in the prudence of the two govern ments. It must, however, be avowed, and it is im portant that every one in England and France should be aware of the fact the situation was for a moment exceedingly critical, and with Cabinets not animated with reciprocal esteem and kind. feelings, a paltry subject of dispute, envenomed by a false point of honour, might have terminated in a terrible dnel between the greatest nations in Eu rope. We have our national prejudices, and Eng. land has hers. Old revolutionary traditions still exist amongst us, whilst in England all that lonches Protestantism, and the question of religion, arouses the deepest passions of the country. In Mr. Prit- chard, a numerous and powerful party, which sways sometimes even the government itself, only behekt the Protestant missionary imprisoned and expelled by the againts of a Catholic nation. It is this England which our establishment at Tahiti wounded to the heart, and whose exas- peration was carried to the highest point by the ex- pulsion of Me. Pritchard. Our neighbours besides possess an apposition, as little inclined to hear reason as Bur own, and, like ours sacrificing every thing to the blind desire of overturning a ministry. bad By dint of urging on both sides to war, they at least succeeded in gravely compromising peace With two Cabinets, not having the strength to place themselves above these miserable passions, Blood would flow, nud God knows what casastro- phes would afflict the world! An understanding has been come to without the honour of either party being compromised. Here, it was at one time, announced that Mr. Pritchard was to be sent back to Tahiti, and that the vessel in which he was to sail was quite ready; at another, that M. Guizot consented to recall Me Bruat and Cap. d'Aubigny, Mr. Pritchard is not to return to Tahiti, and M. Brunt is not to be recalled, any. more than Capt d'Aubigny. To have a right is one thing, and the manner of using it another. Suddenly removed, Mr. Pritchard may have suffered in his material; and, in consequence an indemity will be accorded him, if there are grounds for doing so. Such are the conditions of the arrangement-an illusory satisfaction for the English opposition, and an enormous concession for that of France; but in reality, an equitable transaction, redounding equally to the honour of those who have offered, and those who have ac- cepted it. Thus, the two Cabinets are entitled to the gratitude of all persons of worth; they have not allowed themselves to be stunned by the cries which were uttered below them, they examined the affair on its own merits with a sincere desiro the falsc to reciprocally accord whatever was just ; point of honour has obtained nothing, and true dignity is satisfied. Let us not however, forget too speedily the danger which peace has incorred- it was a serious one.
