minutes we are informed that, our rulers with an ingenuity which far surpasses that of the im mortal Pit, have invented a new tax-taxation of the dead. Yes kind readers in distant climes, we assure you of the fact, and caution you against a visit to this celestial island-at all events not during the summer months if you would save your heirs and executors the sum of fifty dollars for permission to raise a stone to mark the spot where rest your mortal parts It is true that, what our government have clas sically termed "an upright" is exempt from ta- xation, but in Hongkong such a thing would be decidedly vulgar-and what is of more in- portance,it would, 'not, in this climate be a sufficient protection to the living, froin the most deadly of all noxious gases that from animal substance in a state of decomposition. Had our rulers decreed that each grave should be enclosed and covered over, with a gra- nite slab, closely sealed up with ghinam, and this under a penalty of 50 dollars, it might have been said, that the decree was a harsh one, though it showed the parental care of the executive for the health of the inhabi- tants--but no revenue is the desideratum-re, venuo is the one thing needful—revenue en gages the attention of our rulers and by two successive deliberations of the august council, or councils, a sum of from four to five hundred dollars will be drawn into the exchequer but many who cannot afford the tax will be dobar red from paying the fast mark of respect to de parted friends..

The inhabitants of Hongkong, are not so na- reasonable as to expect the protection of a police, and a permanent establishment to keep the roads now making in good repair, witha paying for it, but if the local govenant have the power of taxation, and if the faint revenue is not sufficient for all oral pup ses, fer them tax us in a respectable Hinahari Let them exbibit their receipts and disburse. ment openly, and if it is abvantele poquito lay a tax-en rent,or on property, but & plan beri- tating the mhabitants by went radiko abg at taxation as auction duties and obst licences, sanda
