at Tahiti, some stray numbers having been lent us
by parties to whose hands they had come.
On
our first noticing the paper, we stated our convic tion that the main object of its publication was to set forth, in as favourable colours as possible, the acts of the French withorities on the island-that it was indeed an official Gazette. We have been favoured by a gentleman who arrived in the Colum- bine, on Tuesday, with a complete file of the Journal de Tahiti, from the first number, Sunday, 5th May, to Sunday, 11th August, 1844.
The first number is entitled Journal officiel de Tahiti-in all subsequent numbers the officiel is dropped, and it is plain journal, but the same spirit prevails throngh the whole, and evinces, if we are per piculto rely on those communications which have been received in Sydney, and, which we are bound to be-" lieve are the truth, a determination to misce present the whole of the proceedings; and by casting doubts and imputations upon the conduct of all who did not at once recognise the "possession" of the French, to justify the acts of Governor BaVAT, and of those acting under his orders.
