E

(Concluded from No. 15.) Hortowshan to Red Bay.-The const line fron Howtowshan to Red Bay-Jays NE, the distance bring. 104 miles, and with the ex- ception of one Hill and two hillocks is a sandy plain. To the eastward 6 cables from Howtow shan point are some rocka, a portion of which are always uncovered.

Spire-To the NE. of the point is a rock with a remarkable square column on it "Spire" aud a low fat rock to the westward;

N. by E. 1 mile from Spire is Clift rock,which must not be approached within 3 cables, as reefs lay off it to the east and NE.

Nob Reck.Nub rock bears from Black Head Eust, and from the E. Head of Red bay S.15 W. licing 43 miles from the nearest shore; it is steep to.

Red Ray-In working up Red Bay, care must he taken to avoid a reef, laying & cubiles N. by E. from the low bill on the store, three miles to the southward of the anchorage.

'When upon the reef, the eastern Black rock bears N. 63 E By tacking when the Black rocks are in, one with the point beyond them, you will be one third of a mile to the eastward,

Red bay will be readily known by the two

· Black rocks off the point, as well as by the low Red sand Hills at the back of it,

A reef extends N. westerly from the southern of the two rocks, leaving a passage only for small boata between it and the main at low water.

S. 55 E. 7 cables from the southern Black rock. The is a reef which is covered at high water. anchorage lays between the two and the reef has three fins close to it. The water shouls gradually pu going in, after having passed the rocks.

It will be found a very good Rondstead in the northern monsoon. There is a village and a creek in the bottom of the bay.

Red bay to Tingtae Buy.--From Red bay to Tingtae bay the distance is 17 miles, the const trending NE. by N. It is steep to, with the ex- ception of the NE point of Red buy, and of some reefs and a sand spit which lay weat froin Lam tia, and to the southward of a low hill with a house on its summit, where there is a bay in which the water runs a long way back, but it is shallow.

From Red hay, Chapel island hears ENE. 214 iniles, and Canitia NE. Į E. 104 miles.

Directions for Tinghae bay and avoiding the Meruhe shoals have already been given by

Captain Kellet.

In navigating this portion of the coast during the NEly monsoon, the breeze will be found to hang to the northward from 2 to 10 s. x., and in the eastern quarter the remaining period.

And deeply laden vessels will find it mora advantageous to seek shelter in one of the

· harbours or roadsteads above mentioned during a strong NEly wind, than to keep the sea, ng ground can seldom be gained, in consequence of the perpendicularity of the seas.
