rance to come uninvited to a private party. We are -no advocates for violant measures, but really under the circumstance, we believe there are few Gentle men who would not have acted precisely as our countryman in Manila did, with this difference that most people would leave the task to their servants. Our contemporary has unintentionally com mitted one or two errors in his statement of the flair. The persecution has been endured from the 25th of December 1843, up to the latest dates. from Manila; a period of nearly ten, and not five months. Our advices from Manila state, that the Gentleman (we cannot call him prisoner) was not fallowed to go about even under an escort of two Soldiers. Though bail was given nearly ten months ago, for his appearance to answer any charges that might be brought forward against him, he is again in danger of being incarcerated without a tria., or any reason being assigned.
On hearing of this case we would say with our Singapore contemporary" that if the relation had not been well authenticated we should have had great difficulty in persuading ourselves of the
truth of it "
Mr. Farren, the newy appointed Consul for Manila,by our last advices had arrived, and doubtless will exert himself on behalf of his injured coun- tryman, but we fear that the want of the suitable recognition from the Spanish Government will bo thrust forward by the officials of the island as an o stacle in his negotiations with them on this subject, though it will entirely be lost sight of when the shipment of Sugar is the subject of offi. cial intercourse. We trust Mr. Farren will act
with that degree of firmness and decision which England always expects Ifrom her representatives, and he may rest assured that his country will ap. prove of his taken a high tone with the local Go
vernment.

MANILA.—We have just heard of a most ex. traordinary and disgraceful persecution of a British Merchant, in Manila :-Sa extraordinary indeed that if the relation had not beet well authenticated we should have bad great difficulty in persuading ourselves of the truth of it. The facts however are these, and we will leave it to our ronilers to say after perusing them, whether we have not rightly characterized the affair. The Gentleman question on the accusation of having commited a common assault, was arrested and shut up in pri. son, from which he was afterwards released and at last dates had been kept a Prisoner in his own house for upwards of five mouths, not being allow ed to move out except under the charge of a couple of Soldiers He has never been allowed a fair hearing of the case, or an opportunity of meeting the charge against him-hut proceedings have been delayed and protracted during nil the time we have mentioned, and the gi ntleman allow. ed to suffer from all the inconveniences and pH. C, Str. Proserpine, Com. Hough, R. N. nishment of guilt, without being proved to bave been guilty. Even had the charge been regularly grade out, the utmost punishment which could have heen justly awarded to the offence which could have been proved against him, would have fallen short of what he has already been made to undergo, as in addition to his imprisonment, custs to the amount of several thousands of Dollars have been ran up against him, which right or wrong he will he forced to pay. These unjust, arbitrary, a oppressive procendings are stated to have been taken at the instance of two Young Judges who have resorted to them from motives of private pique. The Governor it is said professes himself grieved at the measures pursued by liis subor dinates, but alleges that he cannot interfere, as the law must have its course! This is very strange certainly, and gives us a rather different idea from what we had entertained of his Excel-
Minden, Master Commanding, Wellington,[Hospital
and Store Ship,
lency's power, which we had hitherto imagined large enough for effectual interference in a case like the present. The only way it seems of this British subject obtaining redress is by addressing his Complaint to the British Ambassador at Ma- drid, a round-about way of making his grevances known, but which evil has been remedied by the appointment of a British Consul to Manila who must by this time be on the way to his destination,
and whose first act we trust will be to see that full.
justice is done to his Countryman, and if it shall appear, as we have no doubt it will, on proper investigation, that a gross act of injustice has been perpetrated, in demanding an ample repa-
ration.
