For this reason the Chinese Drug was obliged to be prepared by the users, or smokers, and was but a crude article, rank, harsh, and ill-flavoured in comparison with the Indian Drug, which, thanks to the paternal kindness of the Company, is so admirably prepared to suit the Chinese taste.

The Native Opium, if smoked when new, duces headache and very disagreeable sensations, even to those long habituated to the use of the Indian Drug. When kept about twelve months it is said to be much mollified, and improved in quality.

We have learnt with the deepest regret, that a system of slavery, degrading to the British name has been permitted to spring up at Hong-Kong which, unless immediately extirpated, will become the nucleus of a most formidable e immense obstacles to the progress of Christianity evil, oppose and civilization in the Colony and operate most injuriously upon the Chinese throughout the whole of the Celestial Empire. It is of the highest im- portance that the authorities and people of China should be impressed, from the beginning, with the fact, that the people of this country detest slavery, injustice, and oppression, in all their forms; and are intensely desirous that the blessings they them- selves enjoy should be participated by the whole

GREAT MISTAKE. It is referred to the Six Supreme Boards to investigate and report on the conduct of a Viceroy who had capitally punished by sentencing a police officer to be boiled to death in oil who it seems, was unjustly accused of hay ing apprehended and put to death an innocent man instead of the criminal he was in pursuit of.
OFFICIAL PLUNDER.From a lengthy report to the Emperor (a kind of budget by his Chancellor of the Exchequer), it appears there is a defalcation in the Imperial Revenue of 9,250,000 taels, or nearly £3,000,000. A rigid investigation is ordered, and one would infer that there are many official delinquents. Some of the Imperial kindred are expressly declared to be implicated. Capital punishment is announced to be the certain fate of the guilty.

FROM A CORRESPONDENT, CANTON, 2nd July.—Cotton has receded four mace, why, is not exactly known, some say it is from the Hong Merchants forcing the Cotton men to pay up, to enable them to meet the last Government squeeze, amounting to 1,500,000 dollars; others that the fall is owing to the anxiety of Foreigners to realize. I think both these causes may have had their influence, for every one knows that the Canton Ransom was more than reimbursed, by the extra exactions imposed on our trade, and if we go to sleep in the adjustment of our Tariff which we have the twenty-one millions of war compensation will be repaid to the Chinese by the Foreign Trade.

The same remark applies to Chinamen and others. Hong-Kong being a British Colony, the introduc- tion of slaves therein, the purchase and sale of human beings, for any purpose whatever, by any parties, is piracy and felony, and may be dealt with accordingly.
It is to us a most cheering circumstance, that the first journal established at Hong-Kong should be so thoroughly alive to all that gives dignity and honour to our native land. Never did we feel the value of the sound portion of the British press, in the distant possessions of the Crown, more than in the present instance.British and Foreign Änt i Slavery Reporter.
