"As to news there is none here, unless it be the air cumstance of the king's monopoly of the Sugar trade. be now to yem. In order to secure it to himself for transportation in his own Junks and Ships, he sends thirty miles up the river to meet the Sugar bonts and purchase their targo. This causes as much discontent among the renders (who prefer Europeans and those who pay them cash, to the king who pays when aid as he pleases) as among those who wish to be purchasers The matter has nearly put an end to the foreign trade. The king has recently caused about fifty Priests to be arrested, on the charge of intoxication and perver- sion of the sacred books, and it is reported that two of them are to suffer death by swallowing boiling lead, and the others to pass their lives in disgraced sit- uations".
