THE FRIEND OF CHINA AND HONGKONG GAZETTE.

Tus inconvenience and nez attending a metallic currency e exhibited daily in our mercantile transactions, forcibly brings to our mind the manifest advantages which would accrue from the adoption of a sound paper currency, based on acknowledged and undeniable security for its conversion if required.

"Our present system, that is, the actual transfer of the precious motale from one individual to another, is only the step beyond actual derler. As transactions multiply, we have no doubt proper remedy will be found, either by the establishment Bank or the application of the principal of the Clearing House in London to mercantile transactions in China.

In the Metropolis daily are amounts to the extent of two up to fifteen millions, (averaging more than three millions of pounds as will be seen by the subjoined list,) adjusted with about £200, 000 in Bank notes, and £50 in specie.

An interesang account of the mechanical arrangements regulations of the London Clearing House will be found in Bi- bages Economy, of Manufactures, Para. 173. From a privAIC source which may be fully relied on we obtained the followin statement of the amount of money paid through the Clearing House in London in 1839. We have no later account to refer but a great difference in aggregate amount will have since oc curred:
