THE FRIEND OF CHINA AND HONGKONG GAZETTE.
The operations of the Medical Missionary Society have been successfully prosecuted in its Hospital at Macao, under the super- intendence of Dr. Hobson, assisted by Dr. Lockhart. The num- ber of patients entered on the books during the last eleven months
is 3826. Increased opportunities have been afforded for explain, ing the loading truths of the Gospel to the patients and many books have been distributed among them; this branch of labor has also been carried on at Hong Kong and Amoy, and to some extent farther northward. As access to the people enlarges, the prepars. tion and the distribution of tracts will demand much more attention
than we have hitherto been able to bestow upon it. The school of the Morrison Education Society has also prospered, At a recent examination of the school, the pupils acquitted themselves hand- somely, both in English and Chinese. The boys take a great interest in their own progress, such as occupying their leisure hours in reading, making rules among themselves regarding speaking English and enforcing these rules, asking questions about their
reading, &c., and refusing in several instances to set as idolaters, even when beaten by their relatives, all of which are indications of the most encouraging nature. The Selety proposes to engage a new teacher as so in as its funds will admit, and the erection of e school-house
house and dwelling at HongKong is already commenced." Mr. Williams has lately finished a small volume of 304 pages, called Easy Lessons in Chinese, designed to aid the beginner in the study of the language. Other departments of study and labor,
have been prosecuted as usual
•
The labors of our whole number in preaching and conversation among the people, at the various places where any of us are located, have in the aggregate been far greater than ever before. We are, however, able to see a little better what a vasthwork there is bere to be done, and how much of faith, patience, zeal, and toil must
be laid out before China can hear the Gospel Sound. There is and always will be much to discourage us, there is and ever will be still more to encourage us; and although war is bringing its train of horrors upon this heretofore peaceful land (peaceful and dead
like a valley of dry bones), and the still sorer scourge of opium is slaying its thousands, we will encourage ourselves in the name of the Lord. The cause of the war is exceedingly objectionable, and so has been many of those in ages past which at the end have brought blessing upon the scene of their devastations, The evils resulting from the Traffic and use of opium: are terrific, far exceed. ing, we fear, those of the war; nor do we see how they are to be removed unul the moral principal of the Gospel is brought to assist the weak efforts of the people to resist the temptation. The love of money will continue to lead men 10 raise it and bring it here, as long as the lust of appitite drives thousandy to take it and die. In conclusion, we commend the cause of Christ here to your unceasing prayers, and while you watch the progress of events with a christian's eye pray that they may be overruled for good. But we need not repeat what we have already so often said on this head; we only refer to it that you and we may again be reminded of His hand who directs them all, and whose purposes will stand, He loves his own cause in this apostate world far better than we cân conceive of, and his infinite wisdom, and power will accomplish all that that love has designed in order to save rebellious ma),
