for the tender mercies of the Mandarins are We need not say that this opinion is not shared our mercantile community, whose capacious noble Godowns and houses are now fast pr to completion. We have been assured that the is hardly a single English firm in China, which is not now interested, in the permanent retention of our Island. successes.

THE LATE GALE-We are much concerned to ob- serve the enormous amount of property destroyed by the late hurricane in Calcutta. The loss according to a rough calculation made by a mercantile gentleman in Calcutta, exceeds sixty lakhs at Rs. No less than 44 Pucka Buildings and 367 Tifed ditto have been destroyed, besides 625 Boats.
