REMARKS. The above Return exhibits the Quantities and Values of Merchandize which were en-. tered for Exportation and paid Duty at the Canton Custom House during the year 1854 (corrected in some cases from other sources of information.)

The weights stated are those in use at Canton. 1 Catty is equal to 13 pound avoirdupois, and 1 Picul (or 100 catties) corresponds with 1333 lbs English.

The values given have in most instances been computed upon the average prices of the year in the Canton Market; and where this has been found impracticable an approximate estimate has been substituted.

The reduction of Dollars into Sterling has been made at the average Exchange for the year of 4/9 per dollar.
