REMARKS. The above Return exhibits the quantities and values of Merchandize which were entered at the Custom House and paid Import Duty during the year 1854, (corrected in some cases from other sources of information.)

The weights stated are those in use at Canton. 1 Catty is equal to 1 pound avoirdupois, and 1 Picul (or 100 Catties) corresponds with 1333 lbs. English; I Chang is estimated at four English Yards.
The values given have been computed on the average prices of the year in the Canton Market, and when this has been found impracticable, an approximate Estimate has been substituted.
The reduction of Dollars into Sterling has been made at the average Exchange for the year of 4/9 per dollar.
