THE HONGKONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, 25TH OCTOBER, 1862.
A coral shool however, was found to lie off the S. W. end of little Jarrang, the shoalest part of which with three fathoms on it bears N. 68" W., nine tenths of a mile from the S. W. end of little Jarrang. From this patch, which is its western ex- treme, it extends about S. E. by E. three quarters of a mile, with depths over it varying from four to nine fathoms.
We believe that to have been the "Constance" shoal.
Tambelan highest peak on with the right extreme of Harbour island clears it half a mile to the westward, and White rock on with the right extreme of Large Jarrang leads over Line fathoms on the S. E. end of it. White rock kept well open of the right extreme of Large Jarrang clears the danger to the southward.
There is seventeen to twenty fathoms between this Shoal and Little Jarrang.
Several other Shoal patches and dangers were found, but they lie out of the track of ordinary navigators and which a
a glance at the chart would better describe than a long acount here.
The general description of them given in Horsburgh's is in the main correct. It was our intention to have corrected the positions of, and to have surveyed Victory Island, Saddle, Camels, Hump, &c., but the difficulty of getting sights at the break- ing up of the monsoon prevented this and caused us much delay.
This will be done as soon as possible, however, and the route from the China Sea to the Carimata surveyed; when such corrections as may be found necessary shall be applied to the descriptions given in Horsburgh, interfering as little as possible with the order and arrangement of that great work.
JOHN WM. REED,
Master in Command of “ Rifleman,” and in charge of China Sea Survey.
