THE HONGKONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, 28TH JANUARY, 1865.

BRITISH CONSULATE, BANGKOK, January 5th, 1865.

SIR, I have the honour to inform you that the Siamese Minister for Foreign Affairs has informed me that the export of Rice from this country will be prohibited from the 25th of January until the 21st of August, 1865.

Vessels that have been chartered before the publication of the Proclamation in Singapore and Hongkong will be allowed to load.

This step has been taken on account of the smallness of the crop which, from the paucity of rain that has fallen during the last ten months, will not be half an average one.

I have made no objections to this prohibition because I am aware that there is a great scarcity of Rice, and as the neighbouring countries are in similar or even worse condition unless some step of this sort was taken, the results, to a country in the state of civilization which Siam now is, might be very serious. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your most obedient humble Servant,

To Sir HERCULES ROBINSON,

&c.,

Governor of Hongkong.

THOMAS GEORGE KNOX,

H. M. Acting Consul,
