No. 161.
THE HONGKONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, 9TH NOVEMBER, 1867.
GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.
At the request of Commodore JONES, the following Hydrographic Notice, showing the position of the Rock on which the P. & O. S. S. Singapore was lately lost, is published for the information of Mariners, and others whom it may concern.
By Command,
Colonial Secretary's Office, Hongkong, 8th November, 1867.
CECIL C. SMITH,
Acting Colonial Secretary.
"Princess Charlote," HONGKONG, 8th November, 1867.
The following information received from Commander STEVENS of H. M.'s Ship Perseus respecting the Rock between Hakodadi and Yokohama on which the P. & O. S. S. Singapore was lost, is published for general information.
OLIVER J. JONES,
Commodore.
It is 6 or 7 feet below the water at low water spring tides. Its dimensions are comprised in an area of 9 to 12 feet, with soundings round it of from 13 to 21 fathoms within a circuit of half a cable, on all bearings excepting that of Low Island from the centre of which it is one mile and a quarter distant, on a bearing of North 20° East.
It is situated near the extreme of a sunken Ledge or Bank, of an unlevel nature, which has soundings on it, from Low Island (to the rock) varying from 6 to 17 fathoms.
The Rock is distinctly visible through the transparent water by which it is covered, and no remnant of the P. & O. Steamer Singapore was to be seen.
It is entirely surrounded to a considerable extent, by the most conspicuous of the overfalls and ripples which exist in this vicinity; the whole of which I submit that mariners should be advised to carefully avoid.
