GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.
The following Decision of the Marine Court of Inquiry into the charges brought by the Crew of the British Barque Moldavian against JOHN JOBSON, Chief Mate of the said Vessel, is published for general information.
By Order,
Colonial Secretary's Office, Hongkong, 15th February, 1867.
W. T. MERCER, Colonial Secretary.
FINDING.
The Court having considered the evidence adduced conclude:
First.-That JOHN JOBSON, Only Mate, the number of whose Certificate of Competency is 31,602, did violently assault JOSEPH MEADOWs, able Seaman of the Moldavian at Swatow on the 21st December last, and that the assault was unprovoked. Second. That JOHN JOBSON did violently assault WILLIAM JOBLIN, Carpenter, and GEORGE LUNEBURG, 2nd Mate and Boatswain when in the Woosung River on the 3rd instant:-in the case of JOBLIN there was some provocation, but not sufficient to justify the Mate committing the assault he did-in the case of LUNEBURG there was no provocation.
Third. JOHN JOBSON appears to have struck other men, but the assaults were not of a serious nature.
We therefore adjudge that the Certificate of Joux JOBSON be suspended for three months.
The Court is of opinion that the Master is deserving of censure for not having preserved proper discipline on board his ship.
Given under our hands at Hongkong, this 12th day of February, 1867.
