GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.

The following Notification in regard to the Census for 1869, is published for general information.

His Excellency SIR RICHARD GRAVES MACDONNELL having been pleased to direct that the Census for 1869 should be taken on the 1st Proximo, blank Forms of Return will be served on all Householders not Chinese on or before that day.

If any Householder be overlooked in the distribution of Forms, or if a Form be accidentally mislaid or destroyed, the deficiency can be supplied on application at the Registrar General's Office.

When one Form is insufficient, duplicates may be obtained in the same way, or from the distributing Officers.

In Hospitals, Schools, large families, etc., it is not necessary to write the names of all the inmates, or designate them separately. If the number of Patients, Pupils, Children, etc., of each Sex and Nationality be correctly indicated it will be sufficient.

Similarly in the cases of Chinese and Coloured Servants, Numbers and Sex only are required. It is not therefore necessary to write down their names.

SIR-I have the honor to report for the information of His Excellency the Governor, that an Inspection and Parade of the "Government" and "Volunteer" Fire Brigades was held on Friday, the 14th May, instant. The Fire Engines, Supply Carts, &c. were assembled at the Cross Roads at 5 P.M., and thence proceeded by different routes to the line of road descend- ing from tanks near St. Paul's College to the Clock Tower.

The Hand Engine of the "Royal" Insurance Company and the Steam Fire Engine of the "Hongkong" Insurance Com- pany (the latter with two branches of Delivery Hose) were got into play from one of the Tanks, the Suction Pipes being introduced into the Tank.

The Chinese Volunteer Engines of the "Pawnbrokers," "Silk Mercers," and "Nampak Hongs" were got into play from the fire plugs in Wyndham Street, as also were the three Government Engines.

The Chinese Volunteers attended in considerable force and worked the Engines with zeal. All the Fire Engines were found to be in good order.

An Inspection of the Government Fire Brigade was held at the Cross Roads, Fire Station, at 5 P.M., on the 28th May instant. The Volunteers and Insurance Companies were not called upon to attend.
