With reference to Government Notification No. 91 of the 18th Instant, it is hereby made known His Excellency Major-General WHITFEILD, Commanding Her Majesty's Troops in China and and Lieutenant-Governor of the Colony of Hongkong and its Dependencies, has granted to SHENG-LAI, of the Lai-ün Shop, No. 105 Jervois Street, the exclusive Privilege of preparing ing prepared Opium within the Colony of Hongkong, and the Waters thereof, for the period Year from the 1st of August, 1870.

FIRE BRIGADE OFFICE, HONGKONG, 5th August, 1870.

SIR-I have the honor to place in your hands, for the information of His Excellency the Henant-Governor, the Report of the Fire Brigade for the Month of July, 1870.

A Fire occurred on the night of the 16th July, a Report of which was duly made on the 18th July. An Inspection of the Government Brigade only was held on the 21st July. The Steam Engines, Engines, Hose in use and in store, Fire Ladders, Implements, and personal Equipment of the n were examined and found clean and in order. The Engines were not worked.

A Parade and Inspection was held on Saturday the 30th July. The Assembly took place at the Roads at 5 P.M., and the Engines were thence taken to the Praya near Canton Steamer Wharf. Engines belonging to Chinese Associations were present in addition to the Engines of the manent Brigade.

The Steam Engines were brought into work within twenty minutes of starting from the "Cross'

with four branches of Delivery Hose to the No. 1 Steam Engine, and two branches to the Lagine. The working was highly satisfactory.

The land Engines were all brought into operation from the sea, and were found in good order. On returning to the Station, the No. 1 Steam Engine broke into a drain at "Mercer's" Street, with some difficulty was extricated. The machinery sustained no damage, but some little occurred

Coal-boxes and Fire-bars.

It was considered advisable to bring the Engine again into work that evening in order to test its

on when it was found to be in perfect order, the repairs needful having been made.
