The following Report from the Superintendent of the Hongkong Fire Brigade is published for general information.

FIRE BRIGADE OFFICE, HONGKONG, 5th January, 1871, SIR,-I have the honor to forward to you to be laid before His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor the inonthly Report of the Government Fire Brigade for December 1870.

An Inspection of the Government Steam and Hand Engines, Hose in use and in store and equip- ment generally was had on the 17th December. All were found clean and in good order.

An Inspection and Parade of the Government and Volunteer Fire Brigades was had on the 3rd January inst. The assembly was at the Cross Roads at half-past P.M. and thence the Engines were taken to the Praya near Cleverley Street. The steam Engines were got to work with four branches of delivery hose to No. 1 and wo branches to No. 2. Both Engines were in perfect order.

The Hand Engines were also worked and found in good order.

The Engines of the Pawnbrokers "Nampak" Hong, and Silk-Mercer's Associations were present and worked satisfactorily.

Some new Clamps for affixing to Hose when burst (to obviate the necessity of removing the broken lengths) were tried and found to answer.

The following Notice from the Honorable the Colonial Treasurer is published for general

information.

Owners of Tenements assessed to the Police, Lighting, Water and Fire Brigade Rates, are informed that the Rates are payable in advance during and within the month of January next, for the First Quarter of the year 1871.

The attention of Rate Payers is drawn to the Second Clause of Ordinance No. 9 of 1869, Clause specifies that in Default in the Payment of Rates, such arrears may be sued for by the Colonial Treasurer in the Court of Summary Jurisdiction, and a Certificate under the hand of the Treasurer, setting forth the particulars of the sums due for Rates and then outstanding, shall be "Prima facie " evidence of the Facts certified by the Treasurer.

Rate-Payers are therefore informed that all Rates in arrear after the 31st January, 1871, will be sued for in accordance with the Provisions of the Clause and Ordinance specified above.
