THE HONGKong goverNMENT GAZETTE, 6т¤ JULY, 1872.

FIRE BRIGADE OFFICE, HONGKONG, 4th July, 1872. SIR,-I have the honor to place in your hands, for submission to His Excellency the Governor, the Report of the Fire Brigade for the month of June ultimo.

Owing to the continuous wet weather about the middle of the month, it was not advisable to have the half-monthly Inspection.

The subsidiary Fire Stations were visited by the Assistant Superintendents, the Implements and Hose examined, and with the exception of some defects, which have been amended, found in order.

On the 28th June, at 8.30 P.M., there was an alarm of Fire from a house at the sea front of the Central Market. Foreman LIVINGSTON who has quarters at the Market, proceeded immediately to the place, and found that a cook-house chimney was on fire. With assistance Mr. LIVINGSTON extinguished the Fire. The Steam Engine of the Hongkong Insurance Company was promptly in attendance, and got up steam, but it was unnecessary to bring it into use. Assistant Superintendent TONNOCHY was at the scene; the Government Steam Engines were in readiness, but were not required.

There was an alarm of Fire the following day at 2 P.M.; this proceeded from the Central School, but all danger was removed by those resident on the premises.

On the 29th of June, there was a Parade and Inspection of the Government and Volunteer Brigades. The Government Steam and Hand Engines, and three Engines of Chinese Associations were present. No. 1 Steam Engine worked from the Sea near the Harbor Master's Office; No. 2 Steam Engine from the "main plugs" near Circular Buildings; the Hand Engines also worked from the "mains" in the vicinity; all were found in good order. All the Engines were in their Stations in less than an hour from the time of starting.

I have the honor to be,

Sir,

The Honorable CECIL C. SMITH,
