ed herein, but it is to be understood that in case of variance in the sense of the English and Chi- nese versions, the sense of the English text must
be considered as correct.

the Government Schools in Hongkong, for the

SIR, I have the honour to forward to you the
Annual Report on Education and the Blue Book Returns for 1878.
2. The total number of scholars attending schools subject to Government supervision, dur- ing the
year 1878, amounted to 3,152, as com- pared with 3,144 in 1877. Of this number there were in the Government schools 2,101 scholars
in 1878, as against 2,148 scholars in 1877, and in the Grant-in-aid schools there were 1,021 scholars in 1878, as compared with 996 scholars in 1877.
