GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION.-No. 274.

The following letter from Her Britannic Majesty's Political Agent and Consul-General at Bangkok, is published for general information.

By His Excellency's Command,

Colonial Secretary's Office, Hongkong, 30th July, 1881.

M. S. TONNOCHY, Acting Colonial Secretary.

HER BRITANNIC MAJESTY'S AGENCY, BANGKOK, July 12th, 1881.

SIR,It is my duty to report that some days since an epidemic of cholera, apparently brought down from Burmah viâ the Menam Valley, appeared in Bangkok, and at one time threatened to become serious. It is, however, at present on the decline, and is chiefly confined to soldiers, prisoners and natives from the outlying districts. As the few cases in which it has affected Europeans have been distinctly traced to the incautious use of river water for drink, it might be as well if some cautions were addressed to the Masters and crews of vessels bound to this port, who had better come provided with the necċes- sary supplies for drink.

I have the honour to be,

Your Excellency's obedient servant,

W. GIFFORD PALGRAVE

His Excellency

SIR JOHN POPE HENNESSY, K.C.M.G.,

Governor and Commander-in-Chief,

HONGKONG.
