With reference to Government Notification No. 274 and pursuant to section 31 (2) of the Rating Ordinance, 1901, His Excellency the Governor has fixed the 1st day of July, 1931, as the date for the coming into effect of the resolution of the Legislative Council altering the valuation percentages payable as rates.

THE MAGISTRACY.

No. 280.-It is hereby notified by Command of His Excellency the Governor that an election by the Justices of the Peace of a Justice of the Peace to be recommended to His Excellency the Governor for appointment as a member of the Legislative Council, during the absence of the Honourable Sir HENRY EDWARD POLLOCK, K.Č., will take place at the Registry, Supreme Court, on Friday, the 15th day of May, 1931, commencing at 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

The ballot-box will be closed at 5.30 p.m.

Justices of the Peace who are Government officials are not entitled to take part in these proceedings.

Every candidate must be nominated in writing by one Justice and seconded by another and the nomination delivered to the undersigned not later than Tuesday, the 12th day of May, 1931.

Forms may be obtained at the Magistracy.

SUPREME COURT

No. 281.-It is hereby notified that His Honour Sir Joseph Horsford Kemp, Knight, Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Chief Justice, has by Commission signed by him, and dated the 1st May, 1931, appointed FRANK ARTHUR HOPKINS, Assistant Superintendent of Prisons, to be a Commissioner to admi- nister oaths and take declarations, affirmations and attestations of honour in the Court, so long as he shall hold the said office of Assistant Superintendent of Prisons.
