An Ordinance to amend the Public Health and

Buildings Ordinance, 1903.

BE it enacted by the Governor of Hong Kong, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof, as follows:-

1. This Ordinance may be cited as the Public Short Health and Buildings Amendment Ordinance, 1980. title.

2. Sub-section (1) of section 8 of the Public Health Amendment and Buildings Ordinance, 1903, as amended by of Ordin- section 2 of the Public Health and Buildings Amend- ance No. 1

of 1903, s. ment Ordinance, 1929, is further amended by the

3. Section 121 of the Public Health and Buildings Repeal of Ordinance, 1903, is repealed and the following section Ordinance is substituted therefor :-

No. 1 of 1903, s. 121 121.-(1) Every staircase hereafter erect- and substitu ed shall be so arranged as to have a tread tion of of not less than eight inches, measured from the face of one riser to the face of the next, and no riser shall be of greater height than eight and a half inches.

(2) No staircase hereafter erected shall be constructed with a soffit so as to form any enclosed space between the treads, the risers and such soffit, except with the per- mission of the Building Authority as signi fied by the approval of the plan required under the provisions of this Ordinance.

(3) At every storey on every staircase hereafter erected adequate light and ven- tilation shall be provided to the satisfac- tion of the Building Authority.

(4) Every building hereafter provided with stairs shall have a staircase giving egress to a street or lane, or to an open space leading thereto, to the satisfaction of the Building Authority, and in the case of a building of more than two storeys in height, or in which any floor is more than twenty-three feet above the level of the street, there shall be provided to the satis- faction of the Building Authority an addi- tional staircase giving egress on the roof of the building or some other satisfactory means of escape in the event of fire.

(5) Every main staircase hereafter erect- ed in any building which is constructed or adapted or converted to be used, or which is used, either wholly or in part as a tene- ment house for separate families shall be, together with the landings and enclosure walls thereof, of fire resisting materials and carried by supports of fire resisting materials.
