Allowances to be
awarded
(i) that his parents had for the year immediately preced- ing that date, or for the last year of their joint lives, whichever is the earlier, been regularly cohabiting as husband and wife, and
(ii) that his mother had during that year been wholly or mainly maintained by his father;
(d) a legitimate step-child of that detained person whose mother was married to that detained person before the com- mencement of the relevant period;
(e) a legally adopted child adopted by that detained person before the commencement of the relevant period, being in each case a child who, if living at the date of the commencement of the relevant period, was being wholly or mainly maintained by that detained person immediately before that date.

age limit", in relation to the child of a detained person, means-
(a) in a case where the detained person holds an equi- valent naval rank which is that of an officer of the Royal Navy, the age of eighteen years, and
(b) in a case where the detained person holds an equi- valent naval rank which is that of a man of the Royal Navy, the age of sixteen years;
dependant ", in relation to a detained person, means any person-
(a) with respect to whom the Minister is satisfied that at the commencement of the relevant period that person was wholly or substantially dependent for his maintenance on and was then being wholly or substantially maintained by that detained person; and
(b) who is a father, mother, son or daughter (not being an eligible child), grandfather, grandmother. stepfather, step- mother, grandson, granddaughter, brother, sister, half
sister, brother, half sister, aunt or uncle of the detained person, or a person who has acted in the place of a parent to the detained person, and has wholly or mainly supported him during his minority for a period of at least five years or for such other period as the Minister may direct or prescribe.
(2) References in this Part of this Scheme to the equiva- lent naval rank of or held by a detained person shall be construed as references to the equivalent naval rank which that detained person would, by virtue of Part I of this Scheme, be treated as holding at the date of the commencement of his detention if it were material for the purpose of that Part of this Scheme to determine his equivalent naval rank on that date.
13. Subject to the provisions of this Scheme, there may be awarded in respect of the whole or any part of the periods of detention of detained persons allowances of such amounts of detention. and payable at such times and to such persons as are herein-
after provided.

14. There may, subject to the provisions of this Scheme, be awarded in respect of any period, being the whole or part of the period of detention of a detained person, during which the circumstances of that detained person correspond to any of the circumstances specified in the first column of the Tables
