(ii) in relation to a member of the pilotage or light vessel services, the detention, as defined by section 10 of the Act, of that member which is, or is for the purposes of the Act to be deemed to be, caused by reason of his service;

"end of the war" shall have the meaning assigned to that expression in the Naval Order;

fishing boat' means a British ship which is also a fishing boat within the meaning of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894;

home trade cargo ship" means a British ship, not being a passenger ship, employed in trading or going within the following limits; that is to say, the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man, and the continent of Europe between the river Elbe and Brest inclusive, and "home trade passenger ship" means a British ship, being a passenger ship, employed in trading or going within those limits;

"mariner" means-

(a) the master or a member of the crew of a British ship, being a person who is employed or engaged in seagoing service on conditions which are substantially not less favourable than those laid down by the National Maritime Board, and

(b) the master or a member of the crew of an Admiralty Yard Craft or a vessel belonging to the War Department, being a person who is employed or engaged in seagoing service on conditions which, in relation to the duties to be performed by him and the part of the world in which they are to be performed, are substantially as favourable as the most favour- able terms upon which other persons would be engaged in the United Kingdom to perform similar duties in that part of the world;

but does not include any person who is a member of His Majesty's Naval Forces, a person employed or engaged in seagoing service (otherwise than as a master or member of the crew of an Admiralty Yard Craft) who is subject to the Naval Discipline Act by virtue of Section 90 of that Act, a member of the pilotage or light vessel services, or the master or a member of the crew of a British ship used for private amusement or pleasure;

material date ", in relation to a mariner, or a member of the pilotage or light vessel services, means the date at which it is material for the purposes of this Scheme to deter- inine the equivalent naval rank of that mariner or member;

member of the pilotage service' being a Senior Pilot on an Admiralty Yard Craft), an appren- means a pilot (not tice pilot, and the master or a member of a crew of a pilot beat;

member of the light vessel service means the master or a member of the crew of a lightship, a lighthouse tender or a lightship tender;

the Minister" means the Minister of Pensions; "the Naval Order' means the Order in Council made on the 21st September, 1939("), whereby provision was made as respects officers and men of His Majesty's Naval Forces for the award of pensions or other payments on account of death or disablement attributable to service in those Forces during the present war;
