(a) it is named in a certificate of registration issued prior to the coming into operation of these regulations, or

(b) the plans thereof or of any structural alterations or additions thereto have been approved by the Director.

(2) No alterations shall be made in the latrine accom modation or sanitary arrangements of any school or in the ventilation or lighting of any classroom without the consent in writing of the Director.

(3) The Director shall not approve any plan of any building for use as a school unless such building complies with the provisions of regulations 3 to 14.

(4) The Director shall not approve any plan of any building or group of buildings for use as a boarding school unless such building or group of buildings complies with the provisions of regulations 3 to 14, 34 and 35.

(5) The Director shall not approve any plan of any structural alteration or addition to the premises of any school which will so alter or add to such premises as to prevent them complying with the provisions of regulations 3 to 14 or (in the case of a boarding school) with regulations 3 to 14, 34 and 35.

(6) The Director may require the manager of any school which is in existence when these regulations come into force so to alter and add to the school premises as to ensure that they comply with the provisions of regulations 3 to 14 or (in the case of a boarding school) with the provisions of regula- tions 3 to 14, 34 and 35,

PART III.

Health requirements for schools.

3. Every classroom or such part thereof as is used for the accommodation of pupils and teachers shall be adequately ventilated and lighted to the satisfaction of the Director.

4. In every classroom the windows or other openings to the external air shall be situate on at least two sides of the classroom and shall have a total area equal at least to one- eighth of the area of the floor of the classroom.

5. No cubicle or partition which obstructs the free passage of light or air shall be erected in any classroom.

6. The ceiling of every classroom shall be not less than 12 feet above the floor.

7.—(1) In every classroom-

(a) the superficial area allotted to each pupil to be accom- modated therein shall be not less than 10 square feet,

(b) a space of at least three feet in width extending along the whole length of the wall in front of the pupils shall be reserved for the teacher,

(c) the desks and seats for the pupils shall be so dis- tributed over the area available for the pupils as to permit each pupil to be seated as far from his neighbour as possible.
