No. 913.--It is hereby notified that Mr. ROLAND ARTHUR CHARLES NORTH resumed duty as Secretary for Chinese Affairs on 12th August, 1940.

No. 914.-The Right Honourable the Secretary of State for the Colonies has been pleased to approve the appointment of Mr. GEORGE TREVOR LOWRY to perform the duties of a Magistrate, with effect from 12th March, 1940, inclusive.

Mr. GEORGE TREVOR LOWRY arrived in the Colony on 9th August, 1940, and assumed duty on 10th August, 1940.

No. 915-His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government has been pleased to make, under regulation 9 of the Hong Kong Naval Volunteer Force, the following appointment in the Hong Kong Naval Volunteer Force :-

To be Acting Sub-Lieutenant.

JOHN BASIL SMITH, Esquire, with effect from 23rd July, 1940.

No. 916. His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government has been pleased to approve the following commissions in the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps, with effect from 2nd August, 1940:-

Dr. SOLOMON BARD to be Lieutenant.

Sergeant JOHN BARROW to be Second Lieutenant.

ORDINANCE No. 32 of 1939. (COMPULSORY SERVICE).

His Excellency the Officer Administering the Govern- ment has been pleased, pursuant to Section 11 (7) of the Compulsory Service Ordinance, 1939, to permit SELWYN HENRY LANGSTON to quit the Hong Kong Defence Reserve, with effect from 1st August, 1940.
