ORDINANCE No. 32 of 1939. (COMPULSORY SERVICE).
His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government has been pleased, pursuant to Section 11 (7) of the Com- pulsory Service Ordinance, 1939. to permit WILLIAM EDWIN FUNNELL to quit the Hong Kong Defence Reserve, with effect from 25th July, 1940.

The following is published for general information:-
It has been decided by the Governor in Council--
(1) that where it has been shown to the satisfaction of the Assessor that, in the case of a dwelling, a landlord has reduced by at least 50% the rent including rates which was in force on 1st July, 1940, to a tenant whose wife and/or children were evacuated from the Colony in consequence of the application to such families of the Government's com- pulsory evacuation scheme, then 50% of the rates may be refunded, in the case of complete months only, for so long as the compulsory evacuation remains in force and the tenant continues his tenancy at a rent including rates of not more than 50% of what it was on 1st July, 1940, and does not sublet;
(2) that where the reduction in rent including rates for a dwelling in the circumstances set out in (1) has been reduced by at least 75% then under the same conditions as in (1) 75% of the rates may be refunded.
