In exercise of the powers conferred by section 1. (2) (d) of the Emergency Powers (Defence) Act. 1939. as applied to this Colony by the Emergency Powers (Colonial Defence) Order in Council, 1939. published respectively as Govern- ment Notifications Nos. 707 and 708 in the Gazette Extra- ordinary No. 39 of the 26th August, 1939, His Excellency the Governor makes the following regulation amending the Merchant Shipping Ordinance. 1899, and the Merchant Shipping (Aliens Employmenty Ordinance, 1922.

Amendment.

The following proviso is added at the end of section 4 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance, 1899, and section of the Merchant Shipping (Aliens Employment) Ordinance, 1922 :-

Provided that nothing in this section or in any other enactment to the contrary shall be deemed to prevent the employment of any subject or former subject of Denmark, or of any other foreign state which may be specified by the Governor in Couneil, from acting as master or officer of any grade in a British ship if the Governor has granted him an authority to act in such capacity or if such subject is in possession of an authority (issued by the Minister of Shipping in the United Kingdom, by His Majesty's Government in any Dominion, or by the Government of India, or by the Govern- ment of any British Colony, overseas territory, protectorate, or protected State, or of any territory in respect of which a mandate on behalf of the League of Nations has been accepted by His Majesty) authorizing him to act in such capacity.
