KING'S SCHOOL, CANTERBURY,

Milner Memorial Schlarships.

Five Milner Memorial Scholarships have recently been founded at the King's School, Canterbury, under a Trust Deed, out of funds collected by the Lord Milner Memorial Committee, to perpetuate the memory of the work done for the British Empire by the late Lord Milner. Their value is £100 a year for five years, and one Scholarship will be awarded each year. Candidates must be over 13 and under 14 years of age on 24th June. These Scholarships are open to "boys of British parentage and European des-

cent

(i) whose fathers are or have been members of the permanent establishment of the Civil Service in India, the Colonies not possessing responsible Govern- ment, Protectorates, or the territories administered under mandate by His Majesty's Government in Great Britain, or in Iraq, Egypt, or the Anglo- Egyptian Sudan; or

(ii) whose fathers not being or having been members of the permanent establish- ment nevertheless have been continuously employed in any such service for a period of not less than ten years; or

(iii) whose parents or surviving parent reside in some part of the British Empire where facilities for Secondary Education are for the time being insufficient or inadequate".

In awarding these Scholarships account will be taken of:-

(a) intellectual ability as decided by a brief written examination;

(b) character;

(c) the financial circumstances of the parent or guardian.

The names of candidates for the Scholarship to be awarded in 1929 must reach the Headmaster, the King's School, by 1st May, 1929, at the latest, with a letter stating fully the grounds on which the candidate claims to be eligible for the Scholarship. Applica- tions must be accompanied by a copy of the boy's birth certificate, and a full testimonial as to his character, ability at work or games, capacity for leadership, &c., from his pre- sent or most recent schoolmaster or tutor. It must also be accompanied by a statement as to the financial circumstances of the parent or guardian on a special form which may be obtained from the Headmaster. This information will be treated as strictly confiden- tial.

Boys who are being educated in England will be expected to come to Canterbury for the written examination on 26th June. Boys who are being educated overseas will sit for the examination on the same date under regulations to be male by their local education authority, to whom copies of the paper will be sent, and who will return the answers to England for correction and comparison. Applications on behalf of candi- dates overseas must be accompanied by the name and address of the local education authority to whom papers are to be sent.
