2. The Minutes of the Meeting held on the 19th April, 1928, were confirmed.

PAPERS.

3. The following paper was laid on the table :-

Regulation made by the Governor in Council under section 25 (4) of the

Merchant Shipping Ordinance, 1899, on 12th April, 1928.

REPORT OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE.

4. The Colonial Secretary laid on the table the Report of the Finance Committee

(No. 5), dated 19th April, 1928, and moved its adoption.

The Colonial Treasurer seconded.

Question-put and agreed to.

PETITIONS.

5. The Colonial Secretary announced that a petition concerning the Chinese

Temples Bill had been received and proposed that it be read.

The Attorney General seconded the motion and addressing Council outlined the amendments which would be proposed when the Council was in Committee on the Bill.

The motion was carried and the petition read.

MOTIONS.

6. The Hon. Sir HENRY E. POLLOCK, Kt., K.C., addressed the Council and moved "That the Answers given in this Council on the 19th April to my Questions. 4 and 7 are unsatisfactory. "

The Hon. Mr. JOHN OWEN HUGHES Seconded.

The Director of Public Works replied.

The Hon. Sir HENRY E. POLLOCK, Kt., K.C., addressed the Council with reference

to certain points raised by the Director of Public Works.

His Excellency the Governor summed up the debate whereupon the Hon. Sir HENRY E. POLLOCK requested leave to withdraw his motion, which was granted.

7. Chinese Temples Bill.-The Hon. Sir SHOUSON CHOW, Kt., moved the Second reading of the Bill intituled "An Ordinance to suppress and prevent abuses in the management of Chinese temples and in the administration of the funds of Chinese temples. "

The Hon. Mr. R. H. KOTEWALL, C.M.G., LL.D. seconded.

Question-put and agreed to.

Bill read a second time.

Council in Committee on the Bill.

The following amendments resulting from the consideration of the Temple

keepers petition were carried:--

The following words were inserted in clause 4 (1) immediately before the words

no Chinese Temple":-

"Subject to the provisions of sub-sections (3) and (4).

The following words were inserted in clause 4 (2) immediately before the words
