4. Should the Lessee fail to comply with these conditions the sum deposited by him shall be forfeited to the Government, and he shall be liable to make good any loss or damage which the Government may incur through his failure to comply with such condi- tious.
5. The successful bidder shall not be entitled to any stone quarried by the present Lessee prior to the 1st January, 1918, except upon payment of the value thereof to the said Lessee.

New Storm Signal Code.
NOTICE is hereby given that on the 1st February 1918 the appended new Storm Signal Code will come into operation at the Storm Signal Stations of the Maritime Customs, at the French Municipal Storm Signal Station at Shanghai, and at the British Storm Signal Station at Weihaiwei.
Copies of the Code in single sheet form can be obtained from the several Harbour Masters' Offices of the Maritime Customs.

General Explanation.
1. The Signals are made by means of certain Symbols, each corresponding, for certain purposes, to a number:-

2°. The Signals are hoisted at the yard-arms and masthead of the Storm Signal Mast
and have the following general characteristics:
Typhoon and Continental Depression Signals :
(a.) 4 symbols at one yard-arm showing the position of the centre.
(b.) 3 symbols at the other yard-arm showing the direction of motion and/or
certain characteristics (see Tables Nos. 1, 2, and 3).
(c.) 1 symbol at the masthead showing the time the warning was issued by
the Observatory (see Table No. 4).
