The Astronomical positions are only approximate unless seconds are given. The bearings are given both True and Magnetic, and those relating to lights are from seaward. The visibility of lights is that in clear weather. Fog signals are sounded only in thick or foggy weather. The heights given are heights of *focal plane above high water.

SOUTH COAST.

Bass Strait.

Cape Schanck Light. Intended Alteration in Characteristics.-- Auxiliary Red Light to be Discontinued.

MARINERS and others are hereby notified that the White Fixed and Flashing Light on Cape Schanck will be replaced by a Single Flashing Light with White and Red Sectors; and, further, that the Auxiliary Red Fixed Light will be discontinued on or about 15th April, 1917.

Position. Latitude 38° 30′ S.; Longitude 144° 53′ E.

Details. The White Fired and Flashing Light will be replaced by a new Light

having the undermentioned characteristics:

Character. A Single Flashing Light with White and Red Sectors, showing one

flash every seven and one-half seconds, thus :-

White from 290° (N. 781⁄2 W. Mag.) to 130° (S. 58§ 7. Mag.),

Power.--200,000 candles.

Auxiliary Light.-On or about 15th April, 1917, the Auxiliary Fixed Red Light

will be discontinued.

Note.--The other details of the Light will remain unchanged.

Remarks.--The Fixed and Flashing Light will be extinguished from about 1st March, 1917, in order that the necessary alteration in the apparatus may be carried out. In the interval, a temporary Group Flashing White Light, showing four flashes in quick succession every twenty seconds, thus

Eclipse Flash 1 sec. 5 sec. will be exhibited from a wooden structure about 17 feet high at a distance of 350 yards E.S.E. from the Lighthouse.
