No. 727.-His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint EDWARD ALEXANDER IRVING to act as Registrar General during the absence on vacation leave of the Honourable Mr. ARTHUR WINBOLT BREWIN.

COLONIAL SECRETARY'S DEPARTMENT.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FOR CLERKSHIPS IN THE

HONGKONG CIVIL SERVICE.

1. An Examination of candidates for clerkships in the Hongkong Civil Service will be held by the Board of Examiners on Monday, 1st October, 1906.

2. Applicants for examination must not be under 16 or over

24 years of age.

3. Applications for examination must be sent to the Secretary, Board of Examiners, on or before the 15th September, accompanied by :--

(a.) A certificate of age, when the applicant was born in the Colony, or satisfactory

proof of age when the applicant was not born in the Colony.

(b.) Certificates of character from the applicant's Schoolmasters or Employers,

covering a period of three years before the date of application.

(~.) A medical certificate as to fitness for service obtained at the Government

Civil Hospital.

(d) An examination fee of $10.

4. Applicants will be informed a week before the date of the examination whether they are accepted for it. If not accepted, the examination fee will be returned.

5. The subjects of examination will be the following:-

English.-Conversation, dictation, handwriting and composition.

Arithmetic.—Including vulgar and decimal fractions and simple problems.

Geography.

Candidates must obtain 66 per cent. of marks to qualify. ·

6. Of the candidates who qualify, a number, not exceeding ten, will be taken from the top of the list and accepted as Probationer Clerks. They will have seniority according to the order in which they pass.

7. Probationer Clerks will receive a salary of $20 a month, and will be attached for duty to any department selected by the Governor.

8. The services of Probationer Clerks who do not give satisfaction will be dispensed with, and they will be debarred from again entering for examination.
