NOTICES.

COLONIAL SECRETARY'S DEPARTMENT.

No. 359.-It is hereby notified that Government Notification No. 351 of the 20th April, 1906, is cancelled and the following is substituted.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS FOR CLERKSHIPS IN THE HONGKONG CIVIL SERVICE.

1. Examinations of candidates for clerkships in the Hongkong Civil Service will be held by the Board of Examiners in the mouths of June and December in each year.

2. Applicants for examination must not be under 16 or over 24 years of age.

3. Applications for examination must be sent to the Secretary, Board of Examiners, before the 13th May for the June Examination and the 15th November for the December Examination accompanied by:-

(.) A certificate of age, when the applicant was born in the Colony, or satisfactory

proof of age when the applicant was not born in the Colony.

(6.) Certificates of character from the applicant's Schoolmasters or Employers,

covering a periol of three years before the date of application.

(c.) A medical certificate as to fitness for service obtained at the Government

Civil Hospital.

(.) An examination fee of $10.

4. Applicants will be informed a week before the date of the examination whether they are accepted for it. If not accepted the examination fee will be returned.

5. The subjects of examination will be the following:-

English.-Conversation, dictation, handwriting and composition.

Arithmetic.-Including vulgar and decimal fractions and simple problems. Geography.

Candidates must obtain 66 per cent. of marks to qualify.

6. Of the candidates who qualify at each examination a number, notified before the examination is held, will be taken from the top of the list and accepted as Probationer Clerks. They will have seniority according to the order in which they pass.

7. Probationer Clerks will receive a salary of $20 a month and will be attached for duty to any department selected by the Governor.

8. The services of Probationer Clerks who do not give satisfaction will be dispensed with and they will be debarred from again entering for examination.

9. Vacancies, if any, in Grade V of the Subordinate Civil Service ($480 to $660 by $60 annual increments), existing at the time of the examination will be filled at once from Probationer Clerks, and other vacancies in this grade as they occur will be given to Probationer Clerks in the order of their seniority. If Probationer Clerks do not accept appointments offered to them their services will be dispensed with.

10. Probationer Clerks receiving appointments will be required to give a full month's notice of their intention to resign or to forfeit a month's pay.

11. Probationer Clerks on receiving appointments will serve a further term of probation in those appointments which will usually be three months but may be extended as the Governor may determine. If they do not give satisfaction during this term their services will be dispensed with and they will be debarred from again entering for examination.

12. When a Clerk is confirmed in a permanent appointment the fee he paid for exami- nation will be returned to him. In no other case will the fee paid by a candidate who has been examined be returned..

13. Clerks who are confirmed in permanent appointments will be subject to all Rules, Regulations, Orders and Instructions of the Hongkong Civil Service applicable to their appointments.
