The Tide gauge consists of a hollow steel pile with the graduations cut through the face and illuminated from within. It is marked from I foot below zero to 10 feet above Each figure is II inches in height and the level of the tide can be ascertained by noting the proportion of the figure submerged.

Vessels can pass within 200 feet of the tide gauge and get nothing less than 17 feet reduced to low water Springs. At 100 feet off there is nothing less than 12 feet at low
water.
A Tide gauge of the ordinary type will be provided for day use.
Caution. --During heavy weather it may be impraticable to light the gauge.
