The "clear area is to be measured in accordance with the definition contained in sub-paragraph 6.
(2) Compartments which may be measured :-Approved compartments situated in the uppermost between deck, or in the between deck next below may be measured subject to the proviso that unberthed passengers may be carried upon only one deck the floor of which at any point is below the Statutory Load Line mark (centre of disc.).
Approved compartments which are in detached super- structures or deck houses next above the uppermost between deck may also be measured.
Shelter between decks are, for the purposes of this para- graph, to be considered as the uppermost between deck.
No compartment which is less than 6 feet in clear height may be measured, nor any compartment which is not per- manently separated from the crew, cargo and bunker spaces.
(3) Exercise Space :-(a) Exercise space is to be set apart on the weather decks for the use of the passengers and the crew as follows:-
(i) For each berthed passenger, in accordance with the requirements of paragraph 8.
(ii) For each unberthed passenger accommodated in the between decks, 4 square feet.
(iii) For each member of the crew 4 square feet, and for this purpose the clear area excluded under (b) (ii) below, may be allowed.
(b) Spaces which may be measured :-Exercise space for berthed passengers may be measured on any deck exposed to the weather to which such passengers have convenient access.
Subject to the following instructions, exercise space for unberthed passengers may be measured only on the deck exposed to the weather which forms the crown of the upper-most between deck and in addition thereto exposed portions of the deck next above which may be approved by the Principal Surveyor of Ships for this purpose.
Boat decks are not to be included in the area available for the exercise of unberthed passengers.
In computing the space available for exercise, the "clear area" only is to be allowed.
No space is to be included in the measurements :-
(i) To which unberthed passengers have not at all times free access.
(ii) Which is on a forecastle deck, on a combined bridge and forecastle deck, or on a complete superstructure deck, forward of a point distant 1/8th of the vessel's registered length from the stem, or breakwater if fitted, whichever is the aftermost.
(iii) Over which berthed passengers require to pass in going to or from their quarters or lavatories or which has been allocated for the use of such passengers.
(iv) Which is less than 2 feet 6 inches in either dimension. (v) Which is not suitably protected by awnings and side screens or by other approved means.
