A reasonable proportion of the closets must be allocated for the exclusive use of women and children and are to be marked accordingly.

(3)-(a) Fittings should be as simple as possible and where it is proposed to lit closets of the trough type, concrete, fireclay, or other similar material should be recommended. Troughs of sheet iron are not to be accepted.

(b) Each seat is to be separated by partitions and screened by a suitable door.

(c) Flushing arrangements of the intermittent automatic type in conjunction with adequate sanitary tanks are to be fitted.

(d) Soil discharge pipes of trough type closets must be not less than 6 inches internal diameter. Means are to be provided to facilitate clearing such discharge pipes.

(e) The deck within the privy accommodation is to be cemented or a non-absorbent composition of suitable thick- ness which is sanitary and also provides a good foothold may be accepted. Wood is not to be regarded as a suitable flooring.

(f) Scuppers leading overboard are to be fitted for the purpose of draining watercloset houses.

(9) Ventilation is to be in accordance with paragraph 12. (5) and provision is to be made for efficient natural and artifi- cial lighting.

(4) In cases where waterclosets adjoin any compartment used by passengers or crew the divisional bulkheads are to be gastight.

16. WASHPLACES.-(1) Properly constructed houses, at least 6 feet in clear height are to be fitted out as washplaces for the exclusive use of unberthed passengers. Such washplaces are to be on a weather deck and distributed having regard to the position of the unberthed passenger spaces. The doorways should not be visible from berthed passenger accommodation if this can be avoided.

(2)(a) The aggregate deck area of the washplaces is to be not less than 48 square feet for the first 100 passengers or part thereof, with the addition of 9 square feet for every additional 100 passengers or part thereof.

(b) A reasonable proportion of the washplace accom- modation must be allocated for the exclusive use of women and children and marked accordingly.

(3)-(a) Taps or douches connected to a constant supply of fresh or sea water under pressure are to be fitted in the washplaces. The number of such fittings is to be not less than one for every 100 passengers or part thereof.

(b) The deck within the washplaces is to comply with paragraph 15 (3) (e) and suitable draining arrangements are to be provided.

(c) Ventilation is to be in accordance with paragraph 12 (5), and provision is to be made for reasonable natural and artificial lighting.

(4) Combined washplaces and waterclosets are considered to be unsatisfactory and are not to be accepted.
