Steep Island Fog Signal.

In consequence of the variation of the audibility of the Steep Island Fog Siren, and the existence of silent areas in the neighbourhood which have been experienced, attention is drawn to the following extracts from the general warning against undue reliance on Fog Signals (as taken from the published "List of Lights, etc.") -

"It has been clearly established-

That Fog Signals are heard at greatly varying distances.

That there are occasionlly areas around a Fog Signal in which it is wholly

inaudible.

"The mariner should not assume-

That he is out of ordinary hearing distance because he fails to hear the sound. That because he hears a Fog Signal faintly that he is at a great distance

from it.

That he is near to it because he hears the sound plainly.

That the distance from and the intensity of the sound on any one occasion is

a guide to him for any future occasion.

That the Fog Signal has ceased sounding because he does not hear it even

when in close proximity.'

""

According to the state of the atmosphere, the Steep Island Fog Signal may be heard at as great a distance as 16 miles, or at as little a distance as 1 mile, from the Light-station.

A silent area of variable extent is to be expected to the immediate south of and to the westward of Tripod Island.
