required by these rules, and passes the appropriate examina- tion. The holder of a Motor Certificate may have it endorsed for service in steamships provided that he proves at least nine months' service in foreign trade or equivalent service (in the ratio indicated in rules 29 (b) and 31 (b)) in a qualifying capacity in steamships of horse-power not less than that required by these rules and passes the appropriate examination.
Sea service performed in charge of a watch in vessels of the required horse-power by the holder of a Second Class Certificate, either Ordinary or Motor, will be accepted as qualifying for First Class Endorsement of either denomination, provided that in the case of an Ordinary endorsement the necessary experience has been gained on both main engines and boilers of a steamship.
35. Workshop Service.-A candidate is expected to have served not less than four years as apprentice Engineer or journeyman at the making or repairing of steam or internal combustion engines such as would be recognised as affording useful training for a marine engineer. No time served before the age of 15 will be accepted.
Not less than two years of this period should have been devoted to fitting, erecting or repairing engines of suitable size, either in the works or outside, and the remaining two years may have been spent (1) on work of this nature; (2) on work in other branches of the trade, subject to the time allowances specified in the schedule below; (3) at an approved technical school, subject to the conditions specified in rule 38.

In the event of the apprenticeship time being extended to five years or more, four years at turning followed by one year at fitting or erecting may be accepted as qualifying.
This rule applies only to works at which the making and/or repairing of engines, boilers, etc., forms part of the regular business for which the work exists. Service at works where the repairing of engines, boilers, etc., is merely in- cidental to the running of plant, however large, which is used
