THE HONG KONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE, JUNE 29, 1934.
COLONIAL SECRETARY'S Department.
No. 504.-The following Finding of the Marine Court of Enquiry held on the 21st June, 1934, to enquire into the circumstances attending the stranding of the British Steamship Changte, is published for general information.
29th June, 1934.
W. T. SOUTHorn,
Colonial Secretary.
FINDING.
We find that the S. S. Changte (Official Number 153594 of Hong Kong) of which Mr. Frederick Charles Gambrill (Certificate of Competency as Master No. 618 of Sydney) was master, proceeding on a voyage from Thursday Island to Manila grounded on Saluyod Point (Lat. 6° 35' N., Long. 122° 17′ E.) at about 1.30 a.m. on 7th June, 1934.
We find that the grounding was due to an error in judgment on the part of the aforesaid Mr. F. C. Gambrill, in that he carried on his course too long after failing to sight Sibago Island Light when he expected to sight it.
We further find that all the precautions taken by Mr. Gambrill were sound and seamanlike up till 1 a.m., but that he committed an error in judgment after 1 a.m. in not taking into consideration the possibility of a westerly set due to a flood tide.
Given under our hands at Victoria, in the Colony of Hong Kong, this 21st day of June, 1934.
(Signed)
