Amendments to Regulations relating to the Examinations of Masters and Mates in the Mercantile Marine made by the Officer Administering the Government-in-Council under Sub-section (8) of Section 4 of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance, 1899, (Ordin- ance No. 10 of 1899), this 29th day of August, 1910.
The Regulations made by the Governor-in-Council and published in the Gazette on the 12th day of February, 1910, and on page 283 of the Regulations of Hongkong, 1910, relating to the Examinations of Masters and Mates in the Mercantile Marine are hereby amended as follows: ---
1. In paragraph 10 lines 9 and 12 by the substitution of the word the words "Board of Trade" and "Board" respectively.

2. In paragraph 23 (9) lines 4 and 6 by the substitution of the word “Governor" for the words "Board of Trade".
3. In paragraph 25 (2) relating to the Messages by the substitution of the figures "30" respectively,
number of words in Semaphore and Morse 50" and "25" for the figures "30" and
4. In paragraph 33 by the addition of the following: -
"(.) The marking and use of the lead and log lines.
(.) The use and management of the rocket apparatus in the event of a vessel
being stranded.
(k.) Any questions of a like nature appertaining to the duties of a Second Mate
that the examiners may think necessary to ask.
(7.) Also questions on the additional subjects which are specified in the rules of examination for Secend Mates' Certificates of Competency for foreign- going steamships."
5. In paragraph 36 (e) lines 1 and 2 by the substitution of the words "a certain hour angle from" for the words " an hour or more of ".
6. In paragraph 49 (d) line 3 by the insertion of the words "steering gear and con- nections" between the word " to " and the word "engines ".
7. In paragraphs 50, 51 and 54 respectively by the addition at the cud thereof of the words "although such service will be accepted".
8. In paragraph 115 line 1 by the substitution of the word If" for the words "At those ports where ".
9. In paragraph 116 and 117 respectively by the substitution of the words "for their first Foreign-going Certificate" for the words "for the first time for a Foreign-going Certificate
10. In Appendix A by the substitution of the words "Wyman & Sons, Limited, Fetter Lane, E.C." for the words "Eyre and Spottiswoode, East Harding Street, Fleet Street, E.C".
11. In Appendix B under the heading of "Table showing the Requirements as to Sea Service nccessary to Qualify for Examination for Certificates of Competency" by the addition of the following Note :—
It
must be clearly understood that the amount of service laid down in the Regulations for each grade of certificate of competency is the absolute minimum that can be accepted and unless a candidate can show the full amount he must in no case be allowed up for examination.”
12. In Appendix B under the heading of "Certificates for Foreign-going Steamships" by the deletion of the words "Extra Master ".
