16. First Grade Engine-driver.-A candidate for a First Grade Engine-driver's Certi- ficate must be 22 years of age.

In addition to the qualifications required for a Second Grade Engine-driver :—

(a.) He must possess a Second Grade Engine-driver's Certificate and prove that he has been in charge of an engine and boiler for a period of not less than one year with a Second Grade Engine-driver's Certificate.

(b.) He must understand the use of a condenser in condensing engines, and be able to point out the positions of the different valves in the condenser and their uses.

(c.) He must understand how to remedy defects in cases of breakdowns or failure

of any part of the boiler or engine.

17. These examinations shall be entirely virâ voce and if necessary the candidate will be taken to an engine and boiler and must be able to point out the various cocks and valves and explain the use and action of each.

18. Every candidate for a certificate either as Engineer or Engine-driver must produce satisfactory references as to sobriety and good conduct.

Re-examination in case of failure of Engine-drivers.

19. If the applicant fails in his examination he may not present himself for re-exam- ination for a period of six months, when he must show papers that he has been employed for that period.

20. A register of all passed Engineers and Engine-drivers, with the duplicate of the certificate granted, shall be lodged in the Inspector's office.

Change of Engineers or Engine-drivers.

21. In the event of any change of the Engineer or Engine-driver attached to an engine, notice of such change shall be sent within one week to the Inspector, stating the name of the incoming Engineer or Engine-driver and the number and date of his Certi- ficate.

Requirements.

22.-(a.) In the case of a boiler not exceeding 25 horse-power, there shall be in

charge a Second Grade Engine-driver.

(6.) Exceeding 25 horse-power, but not exceeding 50 horse-power, a First

Grade Engine-driver.

(c.) Exceeding 50 horse-power but not exceeding 100 horse-power, a Second

Grade Engineer and an Engine-driver for each separate Engine.

(d.) Above 100 horse-power, a First Grade Engineer and an Engine-driver for

each separate engine.

The horse-power referred to in this Rule means collective horse-power.

The horse-power referred to is ascertained in the following manner:-

For Prime Movers.

When D-diameter of cylinder.

P-working pressure of boiler.

HP-horse power.

Then for non-condensing single cylinder engines:

D2 × √ P
