SIR,- With reference to Lord Elgin's Circular despatch of the 25th of January, 1907, I have the honour to transmit to you, for publication or for such action as may be considered desirable, a copy of revised regulations for the Marticulation Examination of the University of London, and to call attention to the regulations on page 4 with regard to the optional languages which may be taken by candidates for that examination.

The External Registrar states that the following languages have been accepted by the Matriculation Board:

Starred under old Regulations.

By the Mutriculation Board, 25th January, 1909.

Burmese.

Gaelic (Irish, Scottish or Welsh).

Hindustani.

panish.

Portuguese

Italian.

Modern Butch,

Persian.

Arabic.

Russian.

Sanskrit.

Hebrew.

Tamil. Urdu.

Chinese.

and that the special fee referred to in the regulations is £1 in the case of either Spanish or Hebrew, and £2 in the case of any other of the languages named. This special fee must be paid by candidates taking such languages at the same time as the ordinary fee for the exami- nation, and should be forwarded with the application for the examination.

The regulation comes into force so far as the Colonies are concerned in January next.

Order made by the Governor-in-Council under Section 3 of the Licensing Ordinance, 1887, (Ordinance No. 8 of 1887), this 25th day of June, 1909.

The Schedule to the Licensing Ordinance, 1887, is hereby varied by the substitution, in place of the Colonial Secretary and the Registrar General respectively, of the Captain Super- intendent of Police as the officer in whose discretion shall lie the granting of Auctioneer, Public billiard table, skittle-ground, nine-pin, bowling alley licences and of Hawkers' licences, and by the substitution, in place of the Registrar General, of the Head of the Sanitary Department as the officer in whose discretion shall lie the granting of Chinese Undertaker licences.
