Import licences are required for many types of goods.

Compensation is not payable for damage to parcels containing liquids liquefiable substances or glass or other brittle articles.

Prohibitions: Generally the same as for Great Britain with the following additions: Contraceptives, Christmas crackers.

Restrictions apply to the importation of the undermentioned articles:

(1) certain therapeutic articles, such as vaccines, toxins, penicillin, etc., except under licence issued by the Ministry of Public Health, Dublin;

(2) tea, manufactured tobacco, except under licence issued by the Revenue Com- missioner, Dublin;

(3) plants, parts of plants, foodstuffs, fruits are only admitted when accompanied by a licence issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Dublin;

(4) wines; cotton, wool, linen and silk yarn and thread, and woven or knitted goods made of these materials; saccharine; except when accompanied by a licence. issued by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, Dublin;

(5) morphine, opium, cocaine and other stupifiants; firearms and part thereof; toy pistols; except on production by the sender of a licence or permit issued by the Ministry of Justice, Dublin and subject to the conditions indicated in the licence. Customs charges : A minimum customs duty of 2/6 is levied for each type of dutiable goods contained in a packet or parcel, or £1 Sterling if the packet or parcel contains only goods proved to the satisfaction of the authorities to have been grown, produced or manufactured in Great Britain, Northern Ireland or Canada.

A Customs clearance fee of 1/- is levied on each parcel on which the Customs duty does not exceed 10/- and 2/- on each parcel if the duty exceeds 10/-. Packing: The use of hay, straw or peat and waste of all kinds for packing purposes is prohibited.

Confiscation: Parcels not accompanied by Customs declaration or having a a false declaration are liable to confiscation by the Customs.
