Valuable articles in unregistered packets

30. Valuable articles (for example coin, bank-notes, currency notes, securities of any kind and instruments payable to bearer; platinum, gold or silver, manufactured or not; precious stones, jewels and other precious articles) if sent in unregistered packets.

34. Articles liable to customs duty except under the conditions given under the heading, "Articles liable to Customs duty".

PARCEL POST

The undermentioned articles are prohibited from transmission by parcel post to any place abroad:

Certain letter post prohibitions applicable to parcels

1. Items 1 to 8 and 10 to 26 above. The exception contained in item 17 by which parasites and destroyers of noxious insects are admitted to the letter post does not extend to the parcel post.

Arms and drugs

2. Arms and their component parts unless accompanied by a licence issued by the Police Department, and then only if their importation is not prohibited by the country of destination. There are a few cases in which the need for a licence is waived.

3. Dangerous drugs, that is, drugs such as Opium, within the meaning of the Opium Ordinance, 1923.

Any drug to which the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, 1923, applies.

Articles subject to packing regulations

4. Dyes and similar substances, unless packed in the prescribed manner.

5.

Foodstuffs and other articles, attractive to rats, sent to tropical or sub-tropical countries, or to places beyond the tropics. unless packed in receptacles which are rat-proof and do not allow the smell of their contents to escape.

Miscellaneous

6. Oilskins and similar oiled goods, unless the parcel bears a certificate in the following terms signed by a responsible person :-

Any oilskins or similar oiled goods contained in this parcel have been stoved at a temperature of 140° Fahrenheit for not less than eight hours, and afterwards cured for not less than one month before being packed.

7. Paints, varnishes, enamels, and kindred substances which have a flashpoint below 150°F. Those with a flashpoint between 90°F. and 150°F. are, however, admitted exceptionally subject to compliance with the special conditions as to packing and so on given on page 108.

8. Silver bullion, or silver partly manufactured, for example, sheet silver, exceed- ing $800 in value.

9. Apart from the prohibitions mentioned above, many countries abroad, for Thus, various reasons, impose restrictions on the importation of certain articles. the importation of the undermentioned articles may be restricted for the reasons indicated:

(a) Arms, in the interests of public security;

(b) Pharmaceutical preparations, fresh meat and other foodstuffs, soiled

clothing, in the interests of public health;

(c) Plants and parts of plants, including fruit, especially the vine in the case of vine-growing countries, usually for the prevention of the spread of phylloxera;
