The heaviest fines were for persons found operating illegal citizen band stations, commonly referred to as 'Walkie Talkie'. The operation of this type of set in the Citizen Band 27 MHz Band is not permitted in Hong Kong because these frequencies have been allocated for use by essential services.
70. Four cases of reported infringement of the International Radio Regulations by Operators of ships registered in Hong Kong were investigated.
71. The new General Maritime Radiocommunication Certificate was introduced into Hong Kong with the first Part I examination being held in July 1972. A total of 24 candidates sat the examination but only 9 candidates were successful.
72. The 1st and 2nd Class Certificate of Competency were phased out in March 1973, and only re-test and re-validation examinations will be held in future for these classes of Certificates. Examinations were held on four occassions throughout the year with the following results:

74. The annual examination of candidates for the Radar Main- tenance Certificate was conducted on behalf of the Director of Marine, with eight candidates sitting the examination. Six were successful.
