52. The internal parcel service which has been suspended since 1941 was recommenced in April and levelled off at a modest monthly average of 500 parcels by the year end.
Overseas Mails
53. The circulation of mails was kept under constant review and where new air or sea outlets offered and the volume of mail justified them suitable changes were made.
Registration and Insurance
54. A total of 7,174,924 registered and insured items were handled during the year, exceeding last year's total by 333,625 or approximately 4.9%.
Local Mails
55. Constant surveys were made on postmen's delivery beats and revisions introduced as the need arose. Motorized deliveries replaced foot deliveries in several areas and additional vehicles were brought into use during the year.
56. In consultation with the District Administration a special examination of existing delivery services and the conditions of delivery in rural areas of the New Territories was planned and begun.
Posting Boxes
57. The number of posting boxes (including private posting boxes and mail chutes) at the end of the year totalled 373, an increase of 44 over last year.
Private Boxes
58. A total of 12,415 private boxes were available to the public at the end of the year, 11,304 of which were rented.
Temporary Service
59. As in previous years a temporary post office was opened at the 23rd Exhibition of Hong Kong Products for the period 7th December, 1965 to 10th January, 1966.
60. Temporary post offices were also set up at the City Hall for the A.S.T.A. Convention from 18th to 24th September, 1965 and for the British Week Trade Exhibition from 3rd to 12th March, 1966.
