causes. In the course of plastic welding investigations 176 factories were visited, 365 faulty machines located together with 45 factories and 162 machines not covered by licences. 7 cases of domestic receiver inter- ference were handled.

Maintenance

71. Routine maintenance was carried out on a wide variety of electro-medical apparatus and electronic devices for the Medical and Health Department, on V.H.F. radiotelephony equipment for the Water- works section of the Public Works Department and the Prisons Depart- ment and the radio, radar and special equipment on the Agriculture and Fisheries Department research vessels.

Advice and Assistance to Government Departments

72. Technical advice on all matters relating to telecommunications and assistance in the preparation of specifications and examination of tenders was given to Government departments.

73. A telemetering and communication system for the Shek Pik Water Scheme was commissioned. The system provides data at Silver Mine Bay of conditions of pump motors, waterflow and water levels at Sandy Bay.

74. Site tests and installations of equipment for a number of new V.H.F. radio stations was undertaken for the Waterworks.

75. Assistance and supervision was given to the Fisheries Depart- ment on the installation of new Echo Sounding and Net Sonde equip- ment on their research vessel "Cape St. Mary”.

Telephones

76. Internal telephone service is provided by the Hong Kong Tele- phone Company, Limited, a Public Company registered in Hong Kong and operating under a franchise from the Hong Kong Government.

77. Radio-telephone service is available to most parts of the world in co-operation with Cable & Wireless Limited.

78. The system is fully automatic and service is provided from twelve major exchanges together with a number of satellite exchanges. At 31st March, 1965 there were 231,675 telephones in service, an increase of 40,717 telephones over the previous twelve months. New
